SULAIMANI – General voting for the Kurdistan parliamentary election is set to begin in less than 24 hours with over three million Kurdish voters across the Region eligible to take part.
Voters will head to 5,941 polling stations in the province of Erbil, Sulaimani, Duhok and Halabja, the Kurdistan Region’s Independent High Election and Referendum Commission (IHERC) said.
As many as 773 candidates compete to win 111 seats of parliament from 29 entities.
According to IHERC, polling will start at 8 am Sunday and will go until 6 pm. The counting of votes usually begins soon after polling is concluded.
There are 1,036,419 eligible voters in Erbil province, 1,134,760 in Sulaimani province, 677,797 in Duhok province and 66,016 in Halabja province.
Parliamentary and Presidential elections in the Kurdish region were due to take place on November 1, 2017, but were cancelled when tensions rose significantly after Iraqi forces retook Kirkuk and other disputed areas in mid-October.
The Kurdistan Parliament on October 24 extended its current term for another eight months after Kurdistan parliament and presidential elections were postponed.
