SULAIMANI – Unofficial results from early voting in the Kurdistan Region's parliamentary election on Friday (September 28) showed that the number of people who voted for the PUK or the KDP was down compared to the Iraqi election in May.

Approximately 70 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots in favor of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) or the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in an early vote for security services personnel, which represented about a 22 percent drop in support for the two main parties, a source told NRT.

Early voting for the parliamentary election began across the Kurdistan Region at 8 a.m. on Friday.

There are 170,463 eligible early voters including members of the security forces in the provinces of Erbil, Sulaimani, Duhok, and Halabja.

As many as 91.69 percent of the eligible voters for early election have turned out to the polling stations and cast their ballots, the Independent High Elections and Referendum Commission (IHERC) said.

The rate of participation was 92 percent in Erbil, 89 percent in Sulaimani, 93 percent in Duhok, and 93 percent in Halabja, according to IHERC.
