SULAIMANI — An advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on financial affairs said on Sunday (June 27) that demographic trends indicate that Iraq’s population is growing at no less than 2.6 percent each year, which will result in a total population of 80 million by 2050.

Advisor Mazhar Muhammad Salih told state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the population growth will have a huge impact on national expenditures and domestic revenues.

He said that oil income constitutes 93 of the total general budget and estimated that there are more than 8 million Iraqis who receive government salaries, pensions, grants, or social benefits.

Salih added that the increase will add to Iraq’s current struggles to provide enough work for its population. Youth unemployment currently stands at 23 percent.
