SULAIMANI – Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council met on Tuesday (June 12) with the judges who were appointed to replace the electoral commissioners after reports of widespread fraud in May 12 election.
The council spokesman, Abdulstar Berkdar said both sides held talks about the mechanism of implementing the emended election law.
During the meeting they stressed that the amended election law should bring about justice and that the law must be implemented professionally and in a transparent way, Berkdar added.
The Supreme Judicial Council appointed a chairman and deputy chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Electoral Commission on Monday (June 11).
"The judges assigned to carry out the duties of the Board of Commissioners held a meeting this morning at the Council's headquarters, during which the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners and his Deputy were named," said Berkdar.
A fire broke out on Sunday at one of the warehouses where ballots from Iraq’s national elections were being stored ahead of a full manual recount.
It was the latest setback for a process that had already been mired in accusations of fraud and other violations.
One day after the fire breakout, the Rusafa court issued an arrest warrant for three members of police and a member of Independent High Electoral Commission on charges of the ballot box storage fire.
