SULAIMANI — The Turkish military said on Tuesday (June 12) that it had destroyed 12 targets of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq in airstrikes overnight.
Turkey’s army said in a statement that the targets, in the Qandil, Hakurk, and Avasin-Basyan regions, included shelters and ammunition depots.
It added that 34 PKK fighters had been “neutralized” in operations in northern Iraq between June 1 and June 8.
The military uses the term “neutralized” to refer to operations in which opposition forces have been killed, injured, or captured.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that the country had launched operations in Sinjar and Qandil.
“We’ve started anti-terror operations in Qandil and Sinjar. We’ve destroyed 14 important targets with our 20 aircraft,” Erdogan was quoted by Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency.
On June 8, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the country’s army had entered 30 kilometers in to the Kurdistan Region.
Turkish warplanes intermittently carry out airstrikes against suspected PKK positions in the Kurdistan Region.
The three-decade armed struggle by the PKK against the Turkish government flared up again in 2015 after the collapse of a two-year ceasefire and settlement process.
