SULAIMANI — Reacting to news about the government’s increasing debt burden, New Generation lawmaker in the Kurdistan Parliament Mzhda Mahmoud on Tuesday (June 29) said that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has failed across the board.
Mahmoud said in a Facebook post that the “KRG reformed and its debts increased.”
“Instead of reforming to reduce loans and improve the people's situation, the KRG has increased its debts from $27 billion to $31 billion,” she added.
The announcement was made by a KRG cabinet official at a session of the Kurdistan Parliament on Monday.
Mahmoud argued that this was just one of the many failures of the KRG, which she said included cuts to public sector salaries, inability to provide reliable public services, and a crackdown on freedom of expression.
