SULAIMANI — The security forces in Kalar’s Qoratu sub-district allegedly arrested six people on Monday (June 28) after local residents tried to protest in front of an oilfield about pay cuts at the facility and the poor state of public services in the area.

A source with knowledge of the incident told NRT that salaries for local workers at the Chia Surkh oilfield were recently reduced following a change in management.

The protesters demanded that their salaries be restored to their previous level and that the authorities provide more job opportunities and better public services in the sub-district.

The Qoratu Asayish allegedly summoned the six people, including the village chief, to discuss the matter, but instead arrested them, taking statements and fingerprinting them.

NRT called Sub-district Manager Sarwat Muhammed and Spokesperson for the Garmian Asayish Osman Abdulkarim for comment.

Both said that they were not aware of the incident.

Qaiwan Company recently took over operations at the oilfield and was behind the decision to reduce workers’ salaries.

The company is owned by businesspeople affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
