SULAIMANI — The mother of a man from Erbil governorate has called on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to help find her son who has been missing for nearly three weeks, worried that he has been harmed because of his sexual orientation.
The person in question is a gay man, known on social media as Misho.
His mother told NRT that, eighteen days ago, he requested that his mother help him contact his estranged father in Sidakan sub-district in order to receive assistance obtaining a passport.
“His father told him to come to Sidakan,” she said.
She said her son told her that he would stay at his brother’s house, but has not heard from him since then.
“If he went abroad, he would tell me because he was would not go anywhere without informing me,” she said.
LGBTI individuals and supportive family members in the Kurdistan Region are often subject to harassment and violence. NRT is withholding the real names of the missing man and his mother for their safety.
“I ask the KRG to find my son, even if he is dead,” she said.
“I will not give up until I find him.”
