SULAIMANI — Blocking the main road between Dukan and Piramagrun, residents of Kani Khan village on Monday (June 28) protested against a reduction in the number of hours of electricity available on the national grid.
The demonstrators said that they have electricity in their rural village at night, but not during the daytime, preventing them from using air conditioning, keeping food from spoiling, and running household appliances.
The high temperature in Dukan on Monday was 45C (113F).
The road is a vital and heavily trafficked connection between Erbil and Sulaimani. Footage filmed by NRT showed lengthy backups of passenger vehicles and tractor trailers.
NRT reporter Ehsan Sabir said that officials have not responded to the protesters yet.
Protesters dispersed by mid-afternoon, but promised to return on Tuesday if their demands are not met.
