BAGHDAD — The London-based newspaper al-Hayat reported on Tuesday (June 12) that the United States is working with Kurdish parties to create a unified front during the negotiations to form a federal government in Baghdad.

According to the report, the US ambassador Douglas Silliman met with Deputy Secretary-General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Kosrat Rasul Ali who agreed that it was important that the Kurds operate on a joint basis and agree to a common strategic plan during negotiations over the composition of the new government

Additionally, the PUK stressed the need to leave aside internal conflicts and put the higher interests of the Kurds above partisan and personal interests.

The report said that Silliman held similar talks with the Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and head of the National Security Council Massor Barzani, both of whom are senior leaders of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

The secretary of the Political Bureau of the KDP, Fadhil Mirani, stressed that his party had called on all Kurdish forces participate in a joint delegation to Baghdad to ensure the rights of the Kurds and he agreed with those in the PUK who had said that “no one [party] should go to Baghdad without the other.”

"Official appointments will not be important if we can resolve our differences,” Mirani added.

An official in the KDP had earlier confirmed that efforts to unify all the Kurdish parties had been unsuccessful so far, given the claims that massive electoral fraud had occurred during the May 12 polls that have been leveled by the smaller Kurdish parties.
