BAGHDAD — The Supreme Judicial Council confirmed on Wednesday (June 13) that it had issued arrest warrants against twenty suspects in connection with the explosion of a weapons stockpile in Sadr City and four people were arrested on charges of setting fire to a storeroom where election equipment was stored

It also outlined the path forward regarding the investigation into electoral fraud.

The council said in a statement that "the procedure for investigating the fraud during elections is that it will be headed by the Integrity Commission” and the judicial proceedings will be conducted in a strictly independent manner.

The statement added that "court procedures in the investigation of various crimes require confidentiality and accuracy and cannot be published in the media, especially in the early stages of the investigation, contrary to the political activities of other authorities."

The Supreme Judicial Council called on all parties not to interfere in the work of the judiciary and to let it perform its functions under the Constitution, indicating that "the Supreme Judicial Council and the organs and courts affiliated to it do not need guidance or invitation from any body or person to carry out its functions, as it is constitutionally independent from the those other [branches of government].”

The Court of Inquiry in Rusafa announced on Tuesday the arrest of four people who were accused of setting fire to the warehouse of the Electoral Commission. Three of the accused are members of the police and the other is an employee of the Electoral Commission.
