SULAIMANI – Protesters gathered in front of the UN headquarters near Makhmour refugee camp on Friday (December 14) to condemn Turkish airstrikes overnight.
Four people died in the strikes on Makhmour. There are conflicting reports whether the deceased were members of the People's Defense Forces (HPG) or civilians.
Led by the families of the victims, the protest began with a rally at the Makhmour Chand and Art Center. The participants then marched to United Nations office.
The protesters criticized the UN for its silence in response to the airstrikes and called for the international body to strongly condemn the attack.
On Thursday night, Turkish warplanes bombed Gir Ozer and Gali Shlu in Sinjar, Qarachukh Mountain, and refugee camps in Makhmour.
A source in Makhmour told NRT Digital Media that warplanes had been spotted circling the area since Wednesday.
“Our air force has bombed Shingal and Qarachukh Mountain in order to protect our borders,” the Turkish defense ministry said in a statement after the strikes.
More than 20 warplanes and several drones were used in the aerial raids, according to the Turkish military.
