SULAIMANI – Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Jan Kubis, visited  the head of New Generation Movement Shaswar Abdulwahid on Wednesday (June 13) to discuss post-election Iraq.

During a meeting with Kubis in Sulaimani, Abdulwahid accused the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) of rigging votes in Iraq’s May 12 election.

“The widespread voter fraud by KDP and PUK has weakened the Kurds’ position in Baghdad,” said Abdulwahid.

He urged the United Nations to play a better role in the Kurdistan election set for September 30.

A month has passed since Iraq’s May 12 election but yet no agreement has been reached between the largest four blocs in the Iraqi parliamentary election to form a new government.

The Iraqi Parliament passed a bill for nationwide recount of votes cast during parliamentary election held on May 12, after widespread reports of fraud.

A fire broke out on Sunday at one of the warehouses where ballots from Iraq’s national elections were being stored ahead of the full manual recount.
