SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) voiced support for the Sairoon-Fatih alliance announced on Tuesday, saying it was a “positive step”.
Both Kurdish parties released a joint statement early Wednesday (June 13) saying they will send a joint delegation to Baghdad as soon as possible.
“In a loyal and sincere effort to rescue the country from political deadlock, Sairoon and Fatih announced that they will join forces,” the statement read.
“The KDP and PUK politburos consider the step to be positive and we believe it is the beginning of a political roadmap and a good alliance to end the political impasse.”
Both parties wished other Iraqi and Kurdish parties would not let their own institutional interests prevent the formation of a “national unity government.”
Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr’s Sairoon and Hadi al-Amiri’s al-Fatih announced an alliance for the formation of the new Iraqi cabinet.
Sadr, whose political bloc won a May 12 parliamentary election, said during a joint press conference with Amiri, "The new government will be inclusive of all national blocs."
“The new coalition with Fatah is within the national framework and will maintain the tripartite alliance of Sairoon, al-Hikma, and the National Alliance [Watani List],” he added.
A month has passed and no agreement yet been reached between the largest four blocs in the Iraqi parliamentary election to form a new government.
The Iraqi Parliament passed a bill for nationwide recount of votes cast during parliamentary election held on May 12, after widespread reports of fraud.
A fire broke out on Sunday at one of the warehouses where ballots from Iraq’s national elections were being stored ahead of the full manual recount. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said the preliminary reports of the investigation showed that the act was done “deliberately”.
